August in Charleston: Farmers Markets, Festivals & Firefly Nights

August is here, and so are the dog days of summer. The humidity may be thick, but so is the charm. This time of year in Charleston, the key is to pace yourself—preferably with something cold in your hand and live music in your ears.

If you’re local, you already know the drill. If you’re new, welcome—you’re in for a real treat.

Let’s start with the rhythm of the season: farmers markets. Whether you're strolling through Marion Square downtown on a Saturday morning or swinging by the Mt. Pleasant Farmers Market on a Tuesday evening, there’s something about the combination of local produce, handmade goods, and live music that makes you feel grounded. Willie’s Roadside Market at Boone Hall is running a Summer Market every Sunday in August, and if you’re closer to James Island, don’t skip the Sunday Brunch Farmers Market at The Pour House. It’s a local favorite for a reason—live tunes, craft coffee, and food trucks that’ll have you rethinking your kitchen.

If Friday nights are your thing, the Concerts on the Green at Freshfields Village on Kiawah Island continue through the month—casual, family-friendly, and full of beach-town energy. Meanwhile, the Party at the Point series at Charleston Harbor Resort keeps the coastal vibe alive with happy hour drinks and waterfront views.

Baseball fans, rejoice—the RiverDogs are home for three solid stretches: August 1–3, 12–17, and 26–31. Even if you're not the biggest baseball fan, a night at The Joe with fireworks, funnel cake, and that salty river breeze is pure Charleston summertime.

But August isn’t just about relaxation—it’s also packed with events that’ll keep your calendar full. On August 1st, you’ve got your pick: rock out with Anberlin at Music Farm, kick off the Kiawah Arts 25-26 season at Freshfields with The Will Thompson Band, or head to James Island County Park for the next installment of the Reggae Nights Summer Concert Series. That’s three solid options for one evening. Charleston doesn’t slow down.

Looking ahead, Blackberry Smoke with Mike Campbell hits Firefly Distillery on August 5. Then Collective Soul rolls into town at Credit One Stadium on the 6th. Yes, you read that right—Firefly to Credit One, two nights in a row. Line up a sitter and treat yourself.

Feeling outdoorsy? August 7 features a Blackwater Kayak Tour with Coastal Expeditions in Francis Marion National Forest. Whether you're a nature lover or just trying to beat the heat, a shaded paddle through the swamp is a refreshing reset.

If you’re a dog lover, there are not one but two Dog Day Afternoon events—one in Mt. Pleasant at Palmetto Islands County Park on August 9, and another at Splash Zone on James Island on August 16. Imagine your pup splashing around with a dozen others while you sip something cold under a palm tree. Not a bad way to spend a day.

Also on the 9th, you’ll find a Gullah Doll Making Class at Magnolia Plantation—a thoughtful and meaningful way to experience a deeper thread of Charleston’s cultural fabric.

Second Sunday on King Street returns August 10, and if you’ve never gone, you should. King Street shuts down to traffic, and people take to the streets—shopping, dining, dancing, and reconnecting. It’s Charleston at its most charming.

Later in the month, you’ve got the Charleston Jazz Orchestra’s Love Supreme show at West Beach Conference Center on Kiawah (Aug 17), a Moonlight Mixer on the Folly Beach Pier (Aug 22), and a gorgeous Wine on the Piazza event at the Edmondston-Alston House (Aug 21).

And to close it all out? The Lowcountry Jazz Festival rolls into the Gaillard Center from August 29–31. If you’ve never been, this is a don’t-miss event—world-class musicians in one of the most acoustically beautiful venues in the Southeast.
